Hi Payal. We too wanted a very private affair so we invited only immediate family and cousins and decided to invite no friends. If you decide not to invite friends then make sure you invite none at all and let them know that its a family only affair and am sure they will understand and respect your choice. I know several people who prefer a quiet home engagement and sometimes just a 5-6 people gathering and friends should simply respect the couples decision. Hope this helps.

Another idea is that you can have the engagement ceremony be private, but then invite a larger group of friends etc to come celebrate -- either for a meal and/or cocktails.
But your friends should understand if you want something more intimate. Especially if you're doing the whole big fat Indian wedding week of events surrounding your shaadi.
